Turning these into a priority system. Primary secondary and tertiary goals.
Writing an excerpt of why I shifted away from those goals.
Goal Category |
Specific Focus |
What’s the rough goal? |
NICE goal (Near term, Input based, Controllable, Energising) |
Medium Term - what would I want to tell someone by December 2024? |
Long term - what would I want written about me after I’m dead? If this doesn’t make sense, why do I really want to do it? |
What can I do to make this more fun? |
Imagine its a week later and I haven't started. What are the reasons? |
How can I mitigate them? |
How did this go? |
How important is this goal, really? |
Body |
Sleep |
I want to start sleeping and waking at the same time consistently |
Every day, use Sleeptown to develop a streak, going from midnight to 8am (using the Shortcuts app to redirect from my alarm to Sleeptown when I enter it, and to Sleeptown at 11:30pm). Track it in Done too. |
I’m not as much of a night owl anymore, and I have a Sleeptown streak of 100+ - which means I sleep 8 hours every night, from 12am to 8am |
I was someone who made every effort to take care of themselves, and took time to rest and recharge so they could give more to others. |
Implement a night time routine. Set my phone up with the Shortcuts app to redirect to a meditation/prayer app at 11:30, maybe put some calming music on to help me relax. |
- I can’t get myself to get changed and go to sleep because I’m too involved in something else |
- Ensure that I have that night time routine set up. At 11:30, my phone switches to Insight Timer, where I run a 15 minute wind down timer, listen to the sounds and get ready for bed. When that closes, SleepTown opens and I continue my streak. When that closes, Daylio opens, and I do some Daylio reviewing before bed. Then Done opens, I track my goals for the day, use Alarmy for my alarm and go to bed. |
Managed to correct sleep schedule enough to the point where I could wake up at a reasonable time, and sleep appropriately. I think this will always fluctuate but I can do my best to stay consistent, and in the last few days I’ve managed that. |
Quite important |
Body |
Diet |
I want to track what I’m eating so I can eat better |
Every day, whenever I eat something, make sure to note it down in Daylio. At the end of the day, review Daylio, and track this habit in Done. |
I tracked what I ate for a full year. |
I was someone who made every effort to take care of themselves, and meticulously tracked what was having a positive and negative effect on them and their body. |
Maybe challenge myself in some way, or ask ChatGPT how I can? |
- Not writing a note in Apple notes when I eat something because I forget (this is very easy to do) |
|
|
|
- Not using Daylio, or reviewing my eating habits | Try to build the habit mentally that whenever I go to eat something, I go to Daylio and add a note in for what I ate. | I did this for a few weeks. It was helpful for understanding my eating habits, and what my triggers were. Now I feel more aware of when I need Laxido or when I should eat more fruit. | Not so important |
| Body | Exercise | I want to work out regularly to keep fit and work towards astronaut levels of fitness | Maintain a habit of doing 5 pushups a day, every morning when I get up. Once a week, go to the gym, and track both of these in Done. | I went to the gym every week for a year, and did 5 pushups every day for a year (that’s 1825 total). | I was someone who made every effort to take care of themselves, and tracked their bodily fitness goals meticulously. | Put on some music when I do my pushups, or a motivational video. Keep using my motivation playlist for gym workouts. Track my personal bests for running. | - Not having a set day to workout
- Not being in Sheffield near my gym to work out | I’ll set Sunday as my workout day. Even when I’m not in Sheffield, a day pass for the closest gym isn’t a massive commitment. 5 pushups everyday is in my Done to do list. | For a good chunk of the year, I did regular push ups. I also went to the gym probably about 15 times throughout the year, so minimum once a month, which is a start. I’m also looking again at building a regular push up habit that I can maintain. | Quite important |
| Mind | Reading | I want to read more of the things that will benefit my life | Every month, collect a physical copy of a book I really enjoy, or I think will really influence my life. Every day, read it, and implement it’s insights. Maybe a page or two a day. Or looking at my notes for it each day to implement the insights. | I read 12 books in a year, mindfully - making notes on them and implementing their lessons into my life. | I was a lifelong learner who always strived to bring new insights and perspectives into my life. | Keep track of the books I read in Notion - maybe make a progress tracker with colours to properly see how I’m doing. Make my notes easily accessible. | - I can’t find a book that I really want to implement.
- I don’t keep track of the books I read
- I don’t make notes in a specific place | Create a page on Notion dedicated solely for my book list and book notes. Try to read a page of a book each day. | I collected a few physical copies of books this year and definitely have started a collection. I also implemented a decent number of insights and lessons into my life, though they weren’t all written, and I don’t think they need to be. | Somewhat important |
| Mind | Journaling | I want to keep journaling regularly to recount my experiences and do better | Every day before I go to bed, I want to journal about what happened during the day. This can be a part of my night time routine. | I journaled every day for a year. | I was an introspective and reflective person, and was always thinking about my experiences to do better the next day. | Keep looking at the progress tracker in Daylio to see how I’m doing. And listen to music while I journal. | - I always forget to use Daylio at the end of the day. | Create a reminder or automation for 11:55 each day, to use Daylio. | I didn’t journal everyday but in total had more than 50-60 entries, which is very good progress. I also did it physically, rather than digitally, which made the practice more conscious and impactful for me. | Very important. |
| Mind | Writing | I want to write more to express myself creatively and explore my imagination | I want to develop a fantasy fiction world, that can maybe be turned into an RPG, Choose your own adventure book, or DnD campaign later. Let’s say, each week, I write a page of notes about something. Anything. | I did some creative writing for Estraea every single day of the year, from January 1st to December 31st. | I was an extremely creative and imaginative person, who was always dreaming and making stories | Listen to some inspirational music while I write about a certain topic. Do my writing based on audio prompts rather than written ones. | - I don’t know how to track when I’ve reached 100 words.
- I don’t have a set time to do it each week. | Use Apple notes, and just write a full phone screen worth of notes in a separate document each time.
Set Saturday as my day to write. | I did a decent amount of brainstorming for Estraea and held my first DnD session which was very cool - I didn’t collate my notes, but I think I have to put this one on the backburner for now. | Somewhat important. |
| Soul | Prayer | I want to start praying 5 times a day to get closer to my God | Every day, an iphone shortcut opens Nafilah on my phone to show me the prayer times, from which I can make the conscious decision to go and pray | I prayed every day of the year. | I was a profoundly spiritual person, who had a deep connection with my God | Create a prayer routine - something that can help me relax alongside doing wudu. Things like spraying perfume, or relaxing for a bit before I start. | - I don’t have my prayer mat on me while I’m outside.
- The time comes and I don’t feel like praying. | Bring my prayer mat with me wherever I go, and keep it nearby at home.
Use a prayer routine to give myself the space I need to take a break when the time comes. | I didn’t manage this, but I always see prayer notifications now, and it’s at least made me more aware. I have also prayed more than last year I think. | Very important. |
| Mission/Career | University | I want to graduate with a 1:1 to set myself up for a great career | Every day at 9:30am, my phone opens my Notion engineering notes for me to look at what needs to get done in terms of revision, assignments, or my final year project. | I graduated with a 1st Class Honours from the University of Sheffield. | I was very diligent and studious. I always wanted to do my best in my academic life. | Listen to calming sounds while I work, Make sure I take regular breaks. Keep some snacks beside me while I work. | - I don’t wake up on time.
- I get bored really quickly. | Make sure the sleeping habit is maintained before starting this one.
Make sure I have a good playlist of sounds, and some snacks on hand before I start. | I didn’t manage this, but I realised it’s not all that important compared to keeping my health (physical and mental) intact, and being alive. I can have more successes in the future. I got a 2:1 which is still very good, and made so many connections and insights for networking along the way, which many students didn’t do. | N/A |
| Mission/Career | University | I want to finish my final year project with flying colours, having made something new and significantly impactful | Every day at 9:30am, my phone opens my Notion engineering notes for me to look at what needs to get done in terms of revision, assignments, or my final year project. | I finished my final year project with flying colours, and the final presentation went amazing.
It also gave me a better insight into what I want to do in the future. | N/A |
| Mission/Career | Kestrel | I want to have worked with my team to have built and flown a drone by the end of July | Every week, do a short Kestrel focus review. What’s gone well since last week? What hasn’t? How can we improve? What 3 things should I address in the next week? | We flew the final version of PK2 at Buckminster in July, and it won the competition in a category. | I was a great leader and engineer, and I did my absolute best to ensure that everyone had fun and succeeded in their goals. | Brainstorm how I can continue to make Kestrel meetings fun. Show up with a smile and remind myself how blessed I am to do this. Help people have fun while they work. | - I don’t make time for it, because I haven’t set a time for it.
- It’s too vague what I’m actually supposed to be doing, and I’m not sure where to do it. | Make it a weekly thing, every Saturday.
Do it in my notes page, or on Notion, something I can do and then delete after once it’s complete. It doesn’t have to be a big deal, it’s just so I know I’m on track. | I didn’t manage this, but I realised it’s not all that important compared to keeping my health (physical and mental) intact, and being alive. I can have more successes in the future. It also gave me a better insight into my leadership style. | N/A |
| Mission/Career | Personal Brand | I want to continue posting content on my socials about engineering and my astronaut dream | Every day, do a 5 minute review of my biggest priorities when it comes to content creation.
Every week, go over the key deadlines I have set externally and internally. | I posted on LinkedIn, Instagram and Tiktok every week for a year. | I was valued for my contribution to the field of engineering, and became a key person of influence for people aspiring to become astronauts | Establish a content creation routine - something I do each week to help me get in the rhythm of posting. Play some music before I start filming, make sure my setup is easy to put together, | - I don’t film videos
- Editing videos takes me too long because I’m perfectionistic
- I haven’t defined a process for reviewing what needs posting each week. | Make Saturday my day to review the posts I’m putting out each week.
When it comes to having an idea, I should just film it with a basic script. 1-2 minutes.
Editing should be minimal, just trimming and captions. | I did this pretty well and though it wasn’t always consistent as I’d like, I made significant progress. | Somewhat Important |
| Mission/Career | Astronaut Dream | I want to create a database of past and present astronauts so I can learn more about who I need to become | Every day, take an astronaut’s name from the Supercluster site, and add it to my personal database, along with the specific info I’m after about them. Use ChatGPT to refine what I’m looking for each day. | I created a database of every astronaut who’s ever been to space, along with some key info about them, that you can use to help you if you want to become an astronaut. | I had a massive passion for space, and it was contagious. I loved learning about space and sharing it with others, and I worked hard to bring the scientific advancements in space technology to the world. | Make a space music playlist, with space related songs? Or something I can listen to while I’m making it. | - Being bogged down thinking about the specific info I want from each astronaut (the fields)
- Not making the time for it | Use ChatGPT to outline what specific information is most useful to me in my journey to become an astronaut, that I’d want to learn from them. Things like their personality, what their key life experiences were, what they’d tell others about how they could do what they did.
- Set 11:20pm each day as my time to do this habit. | I didn’t do much of this at all because it didn’t feel like a massive priority. | Somewhat Important |
| Mission/Career | Job Hunting | I want to have secured a job by the end of this year | Everyday, I spend at least 5 minutes doing something to work towards my job hunting. Whether that’s continuing to polish the CV, filling in my Job Hunting spreadsheet with new companies, or what I’ve completed in terms of applications sent off. | I secured a job as a space systems engineer in the industry. | I had a massive passion for space, and it was contagious. I loved learning about space and sharing it with others, and I worked hard to bring the scientific advancements in space technology to the world. | Maybe make a progress tracker to go along with the Excel spreadsheet, or try to spice up the spreadsheet in some way to make it more fun. Treat the process with a degree of levity - I’m already pretty set with the degree I have. I’m not dying to get a job. It’ll be fun! | - Not making enough time for it
- Not having a set time to do it | Add it to my Done app as a daily check list item. | I didn’t manage this, but I realised it’s not all that important compared to keeping my health (physical and mental) intact, and being alive. I can have more successes in the future. It also gave me a better insight into what I need to do to be happy. | Very important. |
| Growth | Flying | I want to have started solo flying | Every month, make sure I have at least 1 flying lesson booked.
Every week. make sure I spend at least 30 minutes in flight sims, or applying for flying scholarships
Every day, make sure I read a page of Pooley’s book 1, just to start me off. | I did my first full solo flight. | I was a very capable person with a lot of knowledge in specific areas. I was confident and brave. | Flying is already fun - the revision isn’t as much. So for the pooley’s book reading, it could just involve putting some calming sounds on at the same time. | - Not having a set time to do it | Add each goal (daily, weekly, monthly) to my Done app, to track it. | I didn’t manage this due to funding issues | Somewhat important. |
| Growth | Languages | I want to reach conversational fluency in Arabic and Chinese (eventually) | Keep up the Duolingo streak | I maintained my Duolingo streak for another full year. | I was very knowledgeable, and I had the ability to connect with people from all over the world. | No need really, Duolingo is pretty fun | - Not having a set time to do it | Keep the Duolingo widget on my home screen, so regardless of the time, when I open my phone I can see if it’s done yet. | I did manage to do this for the entire year, doing a Duolingo lesson each day. I think I’d want to advance this a little more by buying some textbook and studying from that. | Somewhat important. |
| Growth | Driving | I want to have learnt to drive | Every weekend day, do a practice test with 10 questions from the Driving Theory app | I have a full driver’s license and I passed my test. | I was a capable person, and loved acquiring new skills. | Not much need since the app is new to me right now, and fun to use. If it comes to it, I could put music on. | - I don’t have a set time to do the test on weekends. | Make Saturday 10am the time I do my driving practice tests. | I didn’t manage this but made some steps towards it. | Quite important |
| Family | Calls | I want to be calling my family each week to check up | Every Saturday at 10pm, give a call to family. | I took time to regularly check in with my family every week, get updates from them and see what was going on in their lives. | I was very family oriented, I cared a lot about the people I loved and I made sure to always check in on them. | Maybe check in with something different each day - interesting news, a joke, a challenge etc. or just something I’d like to do with them soon. | - Not having a set time to do it | Make it an action item every Saturday 10pm in the calendar to call family. | I did this (sort of) | Somewhat important |
| Friends | Deeper Connections | I want to create deeper connections with my friends, spending more time with them on things we enjoy | Organise an event with a few close friends every 2 weeks. Make it low stakes - something like the Treehouse cafe. | I spent time building deeper connections with my friends this year, compared to using it all on work. | I was a great friend, who made time to have deep conversations, give advice, and be the listener for the people who needed it in their lives. | Go somewhere new and fun each time, or do something new. Things like going to play new board games each time. | - I’ve defaulted and haven’t made time for it in my schedule | Every Monday, make it an action item to schedule in some time with a group of friends for the following weekend. | I didn’t really do this but still made more time for friends than previous years I think. | Not important |
Key steps to turn these goals into reality:
